Clyde & Co has announced Steven Lurie’s promotion to partner in its insurance team in Sydney, following the hires of Hugo Thomas and Kyle Bowles last May and William Madani last June as Sydney-based special counsel in the same team. 

In a press release, the global law firm said Lurie’s promotion seeks to bolster its insurance indemnity and liability offering, especially in the financial lines and construction and engineering sectors. 

“Steven’s appointment underlines our growing, strong presence in our core sector of Insurance, and reinforces the career pathways available as part of our Australian practice,” said Rebecca Kelly – Australia managing partner, Brisbane – in the press release. 

“Steven’s promotion to partner is fantastic and will help with our focus on further growing our offering in the professional risks space, particularly in relation to engineering and construction claims,” added Matthew Smith, insurance partner.

In its press release, Clyde & Co shared that Lurie has more than 25 years of experience in the professional indemnity, construction, liability insurance, and financial lines and over a decade in the defence of professional negligence claims against solicitors and barristers. 

According to the firm’s press release, he has advised:

  • multinational insurers, as defence and coverage counsel alike 
  • insurers of financial institutions in claims arising from margin calls made amid the global financial crisis

  • D&O insurers of construction, engineering, and mining companies in class actions 
  • engineering firms across various disciplines in matters such as the defence of professional negligence claims relating to the Gateway Upgrade Project, the country’s largest infrastructure project at the time
