The associate talks helping a startup with key business documents
Matthew Georgiadis’ interest in a legal career was sparked from a young age, having grown up in a family where several members trained in the law. As a self-proclaimed optimist, he finds joy in bringing people and deals together as a property and commercial law expert.
In this July interview, the WRP Legal associate talks helping startups and the excitement of his first court appearance.
What made you choose a career in law, and what's your favourite part of the job?
A lot of my family members are legally trained, so naturally I took an interest in the law from a young age. My favourite part about being a lawyer is assisting clients as part of transactions (no matter how simple or complex). I’d like to think of myself as an optimist and bringing people (and deals) together gives me joy.
What in your opinion has been the most memorable event of your career to date?
I’ve had the pleasure of working on a number of larger deals and they are always exciting. Whilst there have been a few events to pick from, my first time appearing in court was memorable. My heart was beating rather fast that morning!
What has been your proudest accomplishment in the last year or so?
Earlier this year I assisted a small start-up in drafting key documents for their business (which is in a rather niche industry). They have already made great progress with their business, and it is nice to know that I’ve played a tiny part in their early success.
What should the profession focus more on?
Whilst I acknowledge that many others with more experience than me may be better suited to answer this question, I believe the profession should focus on delivering outstanding value for clients. With external pressures, it is becoming harder for people to afford our services.
What are your thoughts on new technology and its impact on the legal profession?
I believe that technology has a role to be used in practice, and especially in the future as the technology develops and learns from its mistakes. However, until such time as it is more advanced, it should be used with great caution and not blindly followed.
What are you looking forward to the most in the coming year?
Professionally, I am looking forward to further exposure to intricate transactions in the Australian commercial and property markets. On a personal note, I am heading to the Boxing Day test match with my partner which should be great fun!
