WA Supreme Court welcomes new judge

Attorney General John Quigley has announced the appointment of Matthew Howard SC as a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

With over 30 years of litigation practice, Howard has a wealth of experience and has appeared in all superior courts. His practice focuses on commercial and public law, with involvement in criminal law. He is also experienced in complex commercial cases. Howard has held various roles, including as an acting Parliamentary Inspector for the Corruption and Crime Commission of WA since 2016.

Howard started his legal career as an articled clerk at the Crown Solicitor's office in 1989. He was admitted to practice in WA later that year. Throughout his career, he has taken on significant and high-profile matters, handling cases in the High Court and appeals to the Full Federal Court and other appellate courts. His expertise and contributions led to his appointment as senior counsel in 2009.

Howard has also shared his legal knowledge by lecturing on various law subjects, including ethics and administrative law. He is a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers and has chaired the Legal Practice Board of WA and Law Access WA. He is committed to providing access to justice, as evidenced in his dedication to pro bono work.

The appointment of Howard to the Supreme Court aligns with the state government's Justice Pipeline initiative.

"Mr Howard is well known for his contributions to the legal profession, and his depth of experience well equips him to shoulder the demanding workload in the Supreme Court," Quigley said. "I congratulate him on his elevation to the Supreme Court bench."

Howard's appointment to the bench will commence on 17 July.
