Victorian Magistrates' Court to launch case management system for criminal matters

The Magistrates’ Court of Victoria (MCV) has announced that the case management system (CMS) portal, previously released for the court’s civil jurisdiction, will also take effect for its criminal jurisdiction on 10 March 2026.

In a news release, MCV described the CMS portal as the single point of access for criminal case management and essential information from the court for Victoria Police, Corrections Victoria, legal practitioners, and other important external parties.

According to MCV, the portal’s features include electronic case initiation and document filing, digitised case records and case details, downloadable court orders, automated notifications, and access to the court’s diary for listings.

MCV shared that it plans to offer information sessions, user onboarding information, and other resources to support the switch from eDocs and ensure a smooth transition in the lead-up to the launch date.

In its news release, MCV explained that the CMS portal is part of its cross-jurisdictional project with the Children’s Court of Victoria and Court Services Victoria. According to MCV, this project aims to:

  • Enable a modern, efficient, user-friendly, and streamlined system
  • Offer an online self-service experience that supports the needs of courts and their users
  • Improve efficiency for users of Victoria’s busiest court
  • Respond to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence

Civil release

MCV’s news release noted that the court’s civil jurisdiction already utilises the CMS portal.

“Building on this success, the criminal jurisdiction rollout marks the next step in MCV’s digital transformation journey,” MCV said in its news release.

According to information from the court’s website, the civil release of the CMS portal has helped court users:

  • Avail of digital filing to physically attend court less
  • Conduct a civil hearing search via the portal’s hearing search
  • Request and obtain access to a case within the system
  • Electronically sign and/or authorise a document or form
  • Update stored payment details
  • Get email notifications
  • View or search their own filings
  • Lodge payments and refunds

The CMS portal’s hearing search for civil matters, which does not require a login to access, has replaced the electronic filing appearance system (EFAS). MCV noted that it has shifted civil court documents from eDocs to the new portal.
