US BigLaw firm snags rival’s disputes and regulatory head
A major US-headquartered firm has snagged the former disputes and regulatory head from a rival in Hong Kong.

Mayer Brown JSM has hired Alan Linning from Sidley Austin, appointing him as partner in its litigation and dispute resolution practice. The hire comes as the firm increasingly needs lawyers in Linning’s area of expertise.

“As regulatory enforcement and related compliance concerns continue to top our clients’ lists of concerns, Alan’s in-depth knowledge of Hong Kong’s regulatory landscape – acquired from his senior roles in the public and private sectors and experience in commercial litigation – will significantly enhance the firm’s capabilities in these areas,” said John Hickin, joint head of Mayer Brown’s litigation and dispute resolution practice.

Linning was with Sidley Austin since 2009. He was also the managing director and head of Asia regional compliance at a major investment bank and was the executive director of enforcement of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission.

In addition to commercial litigation, Linning’s practice focuses on financial services regulatory matters and investigations and proceedings. His clients include Chinese and international banks, private equity firms, asset and fund managers, and listed companies and their directors.

At the start of the month, Mayer Brown JSM appointed joint practice leaders in Singapore.
