Top corporate firm snaps up HWL Ebsworth duo

A top tier Australian firm has solidified its presence in a major growth area after raiding a national counterpart for a dynamic duo to add to its partnership

Australian corporate law firm Thomson Geer has added two superannuation and wealth management experts to its partnership.

Dynamic duo, Scott Charaneka and Stanley Drummond have joined the firm from another national, HWL Ebsworth, where they worked together closely.

Thomson Geer chief executive partner Adrian Tembel told Australasian Lawyer that he’s had an eye on Charaneka “for some time”.

“He meets our style requirements – industrious, smart and 100% focussed on adding value to clients,” he says. “He's an expert who only ever thinks about the clients interests, never his own.”

Charaneka specialises in establishment, licensing, governance, administration, distribution, restructuring, investments and tax matters associated with superannuation, funds management and life insurance products.

He will be based in Thomson Geer’s Melbourne office and take on the national role of head of superannuation & wealth management.

His colleague Drummond, who Tembel says forms “a very important part” of Charaneka’s team,  will join the firm’s Sydney office, specialising in superannuation, life and general insurance, managed funds, financial planning and financial services regulation.

Tembel says the firm has made the strategic move to invest in the superannuation and wealth management sectors due to what he thinks is a long term need for expert external legal advice.

“The sector’s regulation levels and growth outlook are signs of likely growth in future need,” he says.

Although there are no plans at this stage to add further members to the new team, Tembel says that Thomson Greer is very focused on building on its existing strengths in key sectors including telecommunications, gaming and leisure and healthcare as well as superannuation and wealth management.

Charaneka says the decision to move over to Thomson Geer made sense.

"This is the right move for our clients. We need to be in a strong law firm that is committed to the superannuation and wealth management sector" he says.

The new duo’s clients include Australia's largest corporate, industry and public sector schemes.
