This approach can significantly benefit firms in transforming legal service delivery

Shaun Temby believes that law firms can hit it big by fundamentally changing the way they approach innovation.

The Maddocks partner says that in his experience, the biggest opportunity in transforming the delivery of legal services is found in putting humans at the core of problem-solving.

“Without doubt, ‘client-centric’ or ‘human-centric’ design – literally putting your clients at the centre of your problem-solving or new product design – is a fundamental shift for law firms, but offers significant benefits to those that get it right,” he says.

Temby also offers a good first step for legal organisations and professionals to begin this transformation.

“Lawyers need to drop the pretence that they know everything and invite clients into their innovation process from an early stage to seek their insights and feedback,” he says.

Temby is part of the panel that will discuss how legal firms can integrate technologies into legacy IT systems at the Legal Tech Summit, which will be held on 29 October at the Crown Melbourne. The discussion is only one among a packed schedule, which also features sessions delving into using predictive analytics and technologies to provide insight into future outcomes, cybersecurity risks and protection strategies for firms, and driving client engagement and automating legal services through the use of bots. Registrations are still open, with savings available for groups and early registrants.

“So much is happening in the legal profession, as it responds to changes in client expectations, technology and new competitors – these conferences give the profession an opportunity to be exposed to those changes and how different parts of the legal industry are responding to them,” Temby says.
