Roger Derrington, Alister McNab named new ART judicial deputy presidents

The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) has named Federal Court judge Roger Derrington and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia judge Alister McNab as new judicial deputy presidents.

They join current deputy presidents Berna Collier, Ian Jackman and Timothy McEvoy. Derrington and McNab will hold the roles for five years, while Collier, Jackman and McEvoy’s terms have been extended for two more years.

The deputy presidents were selected pursuant to section 206 of the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024. The tribunal also welcomed 35 general members to aid in ensuring the fair, effective and efficient hearing of cases; these members were chosen pursuant to section 208 of the Act.

An independent assessment panel examined the candidates’ fitness for membership in line with the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024 and the Administrative Review Regulations 2024.

It is crucial that the people who hear and decide these cases have the required experience and expertise”, attorney-general Michelle Rowland said. “Each general member appointed today was assessed as suitable for appointment through a transparent and merit-based process. These appointments will ensure review processes are fair, just, and independent by hearing a range of cases to support applicants in addressing their matters”.
