NZ Law Society launches harassment hotline

Lawyers and others in New Zealand’s legal profession who are facing harassment or other sensitive issues can access new phone and online support from today (3rd April).

The 0800 ‘Law Care’ line has been launched by the New Zealand Law Society and will be staffed by a team of five, including lawyers, who will provide advice and information about how to deal with issues in the workplace.

“Staff that are operating the ‘Law Care’ phone line will be able to offer callers a range of options for accessing support and assistance in dealing with their concerns,” explained Law Society executive director Mary Olliver. “In turn, it will also provide the Law Society with another effective tool in gaining a clear picture as to the extent of harassment and bullying that occurs in the legal community.

The line will initially operate 9am to 7.30pm weekdays (5pm Fridays) but the hours may change once demand is assessed.

Alongside the phone line is a new online facility for lawyers to submit reports of harassment or unacceptable behaviour. It will go live at 5pm Tuesday 3rd April.

“The online reporting facility will allow lawyers to obtain information and guidance to assist in determining whether they should submit a report. It will allow them to submit a report online. This can be submitted anonymously,” said General Manager, Regulatory, Neil Mallon.

Details can be found on the NZ Law Society website.
