Merrill MacNish has taken on the CEO role at HHG Legal Group effective immediately.

MacNish was previously the firm’s COO, a position she held for two and a half years. In line with its leadership and ownership restructuring, the firm also debuted a partnership model and employee share scheme.

Dr Steven Cohen, Ben Majoe, Matthew Lilly and Riaan Piek have been promoted to partner under the new model. The following lawyers were also elevated recently:

  • Dianne Caruso – special counsel (family law and dispute resolution)
  • Craig Fordham – special counsel (employment law litigation)
  • James Versteegen – special counsel (family law)
  • Emma Catterall – senior associate (commercial and property law)
  • Rachel McRae – senior associate (family and de facto law)
  • Richard Dewar – senior associate (agribusiness)
  • Lisa Riley – senior associate (criminal and traffic law)

HHG Legal Group also implemented an employee-share-of-profit model and a leadership development programme in partnership with the Australian Institute of Management.

“This evolution represents more than structural change – it's a fundamental shift in how we approach leadership and ownership in a modern legal practice. By broadening our management structure and introducing employee ownership, we're creating pathways for talent to flourish whilst ensuring our team shares directly in the success they help create”, HHG Legal Group managing director Murray Thornhill said.
