Last month, Lextech entrusted senior legal counsel Natasha Paige with the honour of leading its legal function and solicitor teams as the organisation’s head of legal. The new legal lead, who commenced with the firm in 2022, described the appointment as a “significant milestone” and a “defining career moment”.

In the first part of this interview, Paige explains to Australasian Lawyer why it was important for her to be intentional in strengthening her leadership capabilities and shares her top priorities in the new position.

How did you react to learning that you would be promoted to head of legal at Lextech?

Excited – it is a significant milestone and a defining career moment after many years of hard work. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to learn from strong mentors and I’ve been very intentional about building up not only my technical expertise and commercial acumen but developing my leadership capabilities. Many lawyers are very good at the law, but not so good at being a leader. But leadership capabilities are really important to me as I continue to build our team at Lextech.

I am passionate about the area of banking and finance and property, and it feels like the beginning of a new journey which I can’t wait to get started.

What are your top three priorities in this role?

  • Achieving our wider objectives, being the legal experts in banking and finance and mortgage settlements and leading our solicitors at Lextech
  • Faster and efficient settlements, optimising and streamlining processes
  • Managing legal and compliance risks, ensuring every settlement is compliant end to end

What is the biggest challenge you anticipate in this role?

Continuing to deliver seamless mortgage settlements while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and quality. Leveraging technology will play an increasingly important role in supporting growth, efficiency, and scalability as volumes increase.

By thoughtfully integrating new technologies, we can empower our team to settle faster, drive better outcomes for customers, and use AI tools responsibly and ethically.

What kind of legacy do you hope to leave as Lextech head of legal?

I want to be remembered for building and mentoring people and a high performing team - solicitors who are curious and always learning, confident and achieving excellence.
