Jane Doe drops civil case against Jay-Z, Diddy

The anonymous accuser of Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Sean "Diddy" Combs has dropped her civil suit against both men, reported Reuters.

The “Jane Doe” plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the case with prejudice on Friday, thus negating any chance of reviving it, according to a Manhattan federal court filing.

The original suit claimed that Carter and Combs sexually assaulted Jane Doe, who was then 13, at a party after the 2000 MTV Music Video Awards. Doe alleged that the assault sparked post-traumatic stress disorder and caused her to withdraw from society.

While Combs is still facing other lawsuits, including racketeering and sex trafficking charges, Carter was named in Doe’s suit alone.

In a statement released via his entertainment company Roc Nation and published by Reuters and PRNewsWire, Carter said that the suit was “without merit and never going anywhere.” His attorney, Alex Spiro, added in a statement published by PRNewsWire that the suit “never should have been brought.”

“The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, my loved ones and I have endured can never be dismissed,” Carter said in the statement published by PRNewsWire. “This 1-800 lawyer gets to file a suit hiding behind Jane Doe, and when they quickly realize that the money grab is going to fail, they get to walk away with no repercussions. The system has failed.”

He added that “of course” courts were responsible for shielding victims, “while with the same ethical responsibility, the courts must protect the innocent from being accused without a shred of evidence.”

Tony Buzbee, Doe’s lawyer, declined a request for comment, according to Reuters. His firm, Buzbee Law Firm, represents many of Combs’ accusers who filed civil suits against the hip-hop mogul.

Combs is set to appear in a criminal trial scheduled for May 5 to address his racketeering and sex trafficking charges. He is presently imprisoned in Brooklyn.
