HWL Ebsworth reveals new leadership and management structure

HWL Ebsworth has formalised a future leadership and management structure that has a board replacing the current managing partner model.

The management structure of the firm will remain functionally the same; Chief Strategy Officer Russell Mailler will become chief executive partner (CEP), while Chief Operations Officer Kris Hopkins will become the firm’s CEO.

According to the firm, the new structure is indicative of the practice’s growth, which has necessitated the evolution of the governance structure. An internal working group led a review of the firm’s leadership structure; the group received input from the national and state practice group heads as well as the firm’s partners.

“Our new leadership structure preserves the strengths of our nimble management and operations, while also establishing a governance model that reflects and draws on the skills, expertise, and perspectives of our partners”, Mailler said.

Plans are in motion for an initial board election. The proposed start date is set for 1 July.

“Our board will enable greater engagement with partners, provide stability and consistency of governance, and will deliver on our commitment to diversity. We have explored best practice from the corporate sector, reflecting the fact our clients expect that best management practices will be delivered by the people who advise them”, Hopkins said.

The new leadership and management structure was announced after the passing of managing partner Juan Martinez in March.

“Juan Martinez’s leadership drove the growth of the firm for nearly three decades, establishing the firm’s flat management structure and agile processes which have enabled exceptional success”, said Mailler.
