Highlight: HSF won big on deal work at the 2023 Australasian Law Awards

On a night that highlighted the top deal work in the legal industry, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) was the big winner at the 2023 Australasian Law Awards.

The top-tier firm was prominent as a lead firm involved in four of the deals that won at the awards. The HSF team worked alongside Baker McKenzie and Cahill Gordon & Reindel as the lead firms on EQT’s acquisition of Icon Group, which nabbed Debt Market Deal of the Year. HSF also collaborated with Sullivan & Cromwell as lead firms on the 2023 Equity Market Deal of the Year: the all-stock merger of BHP Petroleum business with Woodside Energy Group.

In addition, HSF worked with Ashurst, Gilbert + Tobin and King & Wood Mallesons as lead firms on the Insolvency & Restructuring Deal of the Year, which was APA Group’s acquisition of Basslink. Finally, HSF teamed up with Allens as lead firms on the Sydney Airport acquisition by Sydney Aviation Alliance, which won M&A Deal of the Year.

Allens partner Guy Alexander complimented the HSF team that worked on the Sydney Airport deal, which was led by partner Tony Damian (co-winner of the Australian Dealmaker of the Year award).

“We actually worked really well with Tony’s team on the other side of the transaction. It was a very easy, very smooth and painless process for such a large and complex transaction”, Alexander told Australasian Lawyer on the Australasian Law Awards red carpet.
