Former Victoria deputy premier James Merlino named independent chair at Slater and Gordon

Former Victoria deputy premier James Merlino has been named independent chair and independent director at Slater and Gordon.

He takes over for James MacKenzie AO, who steps down today. Merlino brings to the board two decades of experience gleaned from his time on the Victorian parliament.

During his 2014-2022 tenure as deputy premier, Merlino handled the education, mental health and emergency services portfolios.

“James Merlino is an outstanding appointment for Slater and Gordon. His leadership and governance experience and deep commitment to the community make him incredibly well placed to guide the firm through its next phase”, board director Johan Krynauw said. “With the firm now stronger than ever, this is the right moment to hand over to the next generation of board leadership, and we’re delighted that someone of James Merlino’s calibre is stepping into the role”.

Merlino chairs profit-to-member superannuation fund Rest as well as the Victorian Catholic Education Authority and the Suburban Rail Loop Authority. He highlighted Slater and Gordon’s commitment to access to justice.

“Slater and Gordon has always stood up for people who need a powerful advocate in their corner. I’m delighted to join at a time when the firm is delivering strong outcomes for its clients, investing in innovation and expanding its national footprint”, he said. “The opportunity to help guide the next phase of growth – while maintaining Slater and Gordon’s commitment to access to justice – is an exciting one. I look forward to working with the Board, CEO Dina Tutungi, and the entire team”.

Outgoing chair MacKenzie praised Merlino’s appointment as his successor.

“It has been a privilege to lead Slater and Gordon through a period of significant transformation. The firm is performing strongly, and James Merlino brings exactly the right experience and values to support its next chapter”, MacKenzie said.

According to Slater and Gordon, MacKenzie will remain with the board until February 2026 to facilitate a smooth leadership transition. His departure from the chair post was first announced in August.

He has started acting as senior adviser to Allegro Funds.

Allegro Finds acquired Slater and Gordon in 2023. MacKenzie assisted with the delisting, capital restructure and rollout of the firm’s five-year strategy.
