Former Federal Court judge Anthony Besanko KC starts stint with Atkin Chambers

Former Federal Court judge Anthony Besanko KC has started a stint with Atkin Chambers as a door tenant.

He has begun accepting appointments as an arbitrator, mediator, early neutral evaluator and expert for the purposes of expert determination.

“Anthony’s arrival reflects the global reach of international disputes members of Atkin Chambers are involved in”, Atkin Chambers head Chantal-Aimée Doerries KC said.

Besanko joined the Federal Court in April 2006 and retired in May 2024. He was also appointed as an SA Supreme Court judge in 2001.

He took silk in 1994, and focused on commercial law, equity, company law and negligence actions against professional firms as a barrister sole. He served as junior and senior counsel in long-running SA Supreme Court and Federal Court cases.

Besanko was appointed to the Singapore International Commercial Court as an international judge on January 5. At present, he is vice president of the Academy of Law and sits on the Australian Financial Security Authority’s regulatory committee.

London-based Atkin Chambers CEO and director of clerking David Barnes will manage Besanko’s practice in Adelaide. Barnes said that Besanko’s appointment would “greatly expand the domestic offering in Australia”.

“In addition, I will be actively engaged in helping to develop his practice within the Asia Pacific and beyond”, Barnes said.
