Dentons makes legal history with Uruguay combination

Dentons has made legal history through a successful combination that it says makes it the “first truly Pan-Latin American and Caribbean firm in the history of the legal profession.”

Dentons announced the virtual launch of its combination with major Uruguay firm Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause on 20 April—the first of its kind in the industry. The Uruguay office has been christened Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga.

This combination officially makes Dentons the largest global law firm in the country; moreover, as a result, the firm now has more branches across Latin America and the Caribbean than any other law firm, with a network of over 20 offices.

“Since entering Latin America and the Caribbean in 2016, Dentons has rapidly scaled its presence by combining with market-leading firms across the region,” said Jorge Alers, CEO of Dentons' Latin America and the Caribbean region. “Our launch in Uruguay further strengthens the position for Dentons to become the leading global law firm in the region.”

Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause is regarded as a leading local firm specialising in several areas, including banking and finance, corporate and M&A, energy, infrastructure, labour law, litigation and dispute resolution, natural resources, and real estate.

“The launch of Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga in Uruguay means that we can now connect our clients to Dentons' global platform and offer them an agile, seamless 'one firm' experience across Latin America and the Caribbean and around the world," said Fernando Jiménez de Aréchaga, managing partner of Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga.

In 2020 alone, Dentons has launched a number of combinations worldwide. As part of the first phase of “Project Global Spike,” the firm opened Dentons Bingham Greenebaum and Dentons Cohen & Grigsby, which the firm considers to be “the first step in forming a truly national law firm in the US.”

In the Asia region, Dentons also launched Dentons Kensington Swan in New Zealand and Dentons Lee in South Korea.
