Clifford Chance implements generative AI in global offices

Clifford Chance has further integrated generative AI into its operations as it implements Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Viva Suite across its global offices.

This follows the previous rollout of its proprietary AI tool Clifford Chance Assist last year. According to CTO Paul Greenwood, the firm is “one of the first organisations to be rolling out Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Viva Suite globally at scale as part of our suite of AI-powered workplace solutions”.

Through AI and natural language processing, these technologies are designed to assist with daily tasks such as meeting and task management, drafting emails, and inbox management, along with providing access to continuous learning and insights through Viva Insights and Viva Learning.

The deployment of these AI solutions is governed by Clifford Chance’s global Principles and Policy framework to facilitate responsible AI adoption. This includes securing client consent where appropriate for the use of these technologies in client-related work outside the firm's internal operations.

The framework aligns with international best practices rooted in fairness, transparency, accountability, and privacy. Legal output produced by AI for the firm is labelled as such and is verified by a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.

"Clifford Chance is driving real innovation in the legal sector…this not only signifies dedication to AI-led innovation but also reflects the immense potential for everyone who works in the organisation”,  said Nick Hedderman, senior director, Modern Work Business Group, Microsoft UK.
