Booby-trapped: Utah Bar scratches head after scandalous state-wide email blast

Lawyers across Utah opened an official email from the state’s bar association on Monday afternoon only to be greeted by an inappropriate image.

Utah State Bar officials have apologised after an email sent to a mailing list of all practising lawyers featured an image of a topless woman. The email, which began with an image of Lady Justice, was promoting the bar’s annual spring convention that starts today in the city of St. George. The email was encouraging walk-in registrations for the three-day event.

The bar sent out an apology email about 20 minutes after the promotional email was sent.

“Apparently we have an email sent that has an offensive image on it. I deeply apologize for this and am investigating the cause,” said the email, which was signed by Lincoln Mead, the bar’s IT director.

In a tweet, the state bar said: “Apologies to all who received an inappropriate email from the Utah State Bar. We are aware of the situation and are investigating the matter.”

John Baldwin, executive director of the organisation, said in a statement to Above the Law that the bar is “horrified.” He said they want to ensure that the incident “never happens again.”

The investigation is looking into whether a staff member attached the image to the email, or if the organisation was hacked, Deseret News said.
