Aviation behemoth expands in Australasia with Hogan Lovell’s advice
Hogan Lovells has acted in the Australasian expansion of the world’s largest provider of ground and cargo-handling services.

The global firm fielded a multi-jurisdictional team to help Swissport, which has agreed to acquire Aerocare, the largest ground handling operator in Australia and New Zealand, for an undisclosed sum. Aerocare serves 36 airports, managing more than 160,000 flights and serving more than 15 million passengers every year.

According to Hogan Lovells, which recently appointed a new managing partner in Australia, the discussions for the acquisition stretched for nearly a year.

The firm led in the negotiations, including on obtaining regulatory approvals from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board. Swissport, which has more than 62,000 personnel working in 48 airports across the globe, is owned by Chinese conglomerate HNA Group.

Hogan Lovells fielded teams in Australia, as well as New York, Madrid, Paris, London, Singapore, and Luxembourg. Australia-based corporate partner Tim Lester led the Hogan Lovells team. He was assisted by various partners from other Hogan Lovells offices, including Jose Maria Balana, Peter Ivanick, Alexander Premont, and Sylvain Dhenin.

Senior associate Alexander Koch assisted in the complex deal. The firm’s Australia team included senior associates James Hewer, Reuben van Werkum, and Joanna Yoon.
