Desiring a strong foundation for her future was what led Simone Lowes to study law. She would eventually discover that she loved working in M&A and private equity, helping clients to achieve business goals.

She would also come to find that relationship building is a key building block for a successful legal career. In the first part of this interview, the A&O Shearman partner tells Australasian Lawyer what she considers the most memorable part of her career to date, and why she values every day of living.

What made you choose a career in law, and what's your favourite part of the job?

When I was deciding on a career path, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do. I chose to study law because I believed it would open up a wide range of opportunities and provide a solid foundation for my future, regardless of where my interests might eventually lead.

Over time, I found my passion in mergers and acquisitions and private equity. My favourite part of the job is working closely with clients on some of their most significant and complex transactions. It’s incredibly rewarding to help them navigate challenging legal issues and achieve their business goals, knowing that the work we do can have a real and lasting impact.

What in your opinion has been the most memorable event of your career to date?

Being promoted to partner has to be the most memorable event of my career to date. It represented the culmination of years of dedication, hard work, and professional growth.

What’s the biggest lesson you learned in your career and what advice can you give fellow lawyers about it?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of building strong relationships from the very beginning of your career. In the early years, it’s easy to focus solely on learning the technical aspects of the job, drafting documents, and putting in long hours. However, developing genuine connections with clients and colleagues is just as important. These relationships form the foundation of a successful legal career and are essential for business development as you progress.

My advice to fellow lawyers is to invest time in getting to know people, both inside and outside your firm, as early as possible. The trust and rapport you build will serve you well throughout your career.

If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?

This is a particularly difficult question, as I have been fortunate to experience many wonderful days throughout my life. There are, of course, the obvious highlights—such as the births of my sons and my wedding day—but I find it almost impossible to single out just one day to relive. Each of my experiences (good and bad) have shaped who I am, and I value them all in their own unique way.
