Aimee Pomogacs believes that lawyers must think creatively when it comes to fulfilling their roles for clients.

The Grill'd and Koko Black head of legal and 2024 Australasian Lawyer Elite Woman has learned that a legally sound solution may not always be what’s best for a client. In the second half of this interview, Pomogacs talks the importance of embracing sustainable work-life balance, keeping pace with AI, and why she’d relive holidays if she could.

What should the profession focus more on?

As a corporate lawyer, I believe there should be a greater emphasis on developing commercial and strategic skills at a junior level. For lawyers working with commercial clients, whether in-house or private practice, having a broader understanding beyond legal principles—coupled with the ability to think both commercially and strategically—provides a significant advantage. This skill set enables lawyers to solve problems more effectively and deliver value to clients/stakeholders.

In many cases, the most legally sound solution may not be the most commercially or financially viable option for a client or business. Therefore, it is essential to think creatively while ensuring that you fulfill your role as a lawyer by providing clear, informed advice and helping clients understand potential risks.

What are the challenges you expect in your practice, and in the business of law in general, going forward? What challenges are particularly pressing in the country’s legal industry?

One of the most interesting and challenging spaces right now is the use and management of artificial intelligence and how it is impacting both the legal profession, and also businesses more broadly. AI intersects with numerous areas of law including data privacy, intellectual property and ethics, to name a few. How legal professionals address the challenges and leverage the opportunities AI presents—both within their practice/business and in advising clients and stakeholders—will be pivotal.

Equally important is how the law adapts to keep pace with the rapid advancement and widespread adoption of AI technologies. As more businesses incorporate AI into their operations, legal frameworks and corporate policies must evolve to address emerging issues and ensure compliance in this fast-changing landscape.

What are you looking forward to the most in the coming year?

I’m looking forward to an enjoyable and sustainable work-life balance. I have no doubt the year will be full of personal and professional challenges as I navigate a return to work from maternity leave, however I strongly believe that if you can get that balance right, you can continue to build and succeed in your career while enjoying all the amazing experiences of a growing family.

If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?

It may sound cliché, but selecting a single day to relive is difficult. I've been fortunate to have experienced many memorable moments, both professionally and personally. There are several significant family milestones I would gladly revisit, as well as key moments in my career which stand out as helping frame the lawyer I am today.

Additionally, I would happily relive the various holidays I've enjoyed over the years—because taking time out to recharge is essential for maintaining balance and well-being in what can often be a demanding career.
