Admission Board to launch online admission for NSW lawyers

The online portal which gives lawyers a decision on their application in three to four weeks is expected to be live by early October.

The NSW Legal Profession Admission Board will launch an online admission portal that makes it faster and more convenience to admit lawyers in the state.

According to NSW Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton, applicant lawyers can use the portal which is expected to be live by early October to get a decision on their applications in just three to four weeks.

The first batch of online applicants to be admitted will be admitted on 18 November 2016.

“For the first time, law graduates will be able to apply online bringing the admissions process into the 21st Century,” said Upton. “This is about making it easier and simpler for law graduates in NSW to begin their legal careers.”

The new portal is an effort to make it easier to be admitted as a lawyer in NSW, especially since many do apply yearly.

“Every year 2,400 people in NSW are admitted as lawyers in one of seven admission rounds held each year. The online service will mean they can apply at any time, and depending on their application receive a decision within three or four weeks,” said Upton.

The website will give each applicant a tailored checklist of exactly what evidence they need to provide to support their applications. It will also email regular updates on the progress of their applications to keep them informed every step of the way, the Attorney-General announced.

According to the Admission Board, it will also arrange compulsory criminal history checks in Australia, saving applicants time and money in obtaining checks themselves from police.

From October, there will be more frequent admission days, with ceremonies being held every four weeks at the Supreme Court of NSW, giving new lawyers greater choice about when they are admitted.
