Making news this week, a report by Allen & Overy has found that an influx of mega deals may lead to the biggest M&A year since the GFC, an Aussie first court academy has opened and Australasian Lawyer revealed the top legal employers in the country.

A quarterly report by Allen & Overy found that despite a low number of transactions globally, this year is likely to be one of the strongest years since the GFC, Australia ranked in the global top 20 with the help of Federation Centre’s merger with Novion Property Group at $7.8 billion and Japan Post's acquisition of Toll at $6.5 billion.

A courts academy in Melbourne was official launched this week, aiming to support the courts and tribunals through specialist research, education and training, the academy will offer a Graduate Diploma in Court and Tribunal management.

Though there has been a similar academy in the past, the Sir Zelman Cowen national Courts and Tribunals Academy is currently the only academy in existence in Australia.

Finally, the results of the highly anticipated Employer of Choice survey were revealed this week.  We surveyed around 2,000 employees from the legal industry about what firms are doing right, and where there remains room for improvement.  Based on this feedback, we revealed the overall Employers of Choice.

K&L Gates achieved the top spot for the ‘more-than-500-employee’ category, followed by Minter Ellison and Herbert Smith Freehills.
DibbsBarker headed up the ‘fewer-than-500-employee’ category, followed by Hive Legal and Hall & Wilcox.
