The best lawyers are… ruthless, aggressive, but compassionate?
What qualities make a great lawyer? This was the question asked of the general public by a New York law firm.

Personal injury specialists Console and Associates PC asked more than 1,000 people for their perceptions of lawyers and lawsuits.

On a scale of 1 to 6, “ruthless” scored the most high-scores at 69.5% while “compassionate” was given a 6 by 10.3% just ahead of “aggressive” with 9.5%.

However, the overall ranking tells a more favourable story with “honest”, “smart” and “tough” taking the top 3.

The survey also found that 66% of people think lawyers are “useful” and that personal referrals are the preferred way to find an attorney (51%).

"Over more than 25 years of managing my own law firm, I have noticed a lot of trends in how people tend to look at attorneys and claims - personal injury and otherwise - but that information has been purely anecdotal until now," said Richard P. Console Jr., managing attorney at Console and Associates. "I was curious to see the hard data that would be produced by this survey. I think what we have learned is interesting not only to lawyers, but to anyone who knows, or thinks they know, our legal system."

The firm will be revealing more data from the study in blog posts during the coming weeks.
