The senior associate calls on senior lawyers to be models
Earlier this week, Natasha McClure revealed how being a people person drove her transition from health sciences to law. In the second half of this November interview, the Saunders Robinson Brown senior associate explains why lawyers shouldn’t get caught up in titles and experience, and breaks down major stressors for the profession.
What should the profession focus more on?
Being relatable and down to earth. Breaking the stereotype that lawyers are intimidating and not empathetic or genuine. It’s easy to get caught up in titles or years of experience but these things don’t make someone better than anyone else – they just make someone more experienced.
What challenges are particularly pressing in the country’s legal industry?
An ongoing issue affecting lawyers at all stages of their careers is burnout and stress. The demanding nature of the work, high pressure environments, tight deadlines and a culture that rewards overworking adds to the challenge. Addressing burnout requires a cultural shift – one that values balance and productivity and this needs to be modeled by senior lawyers.
What are your thoughts on new technology and its impact on the legal profession?
It is exciting! New technology is shaking up things in the legal field. Tools like AI and automation will be able to streamline routine tasks to free up time for more strategic thinking. It is giving the profession a much-needed efficiency boost once carefully adapted. That said, tech doesn’t replace judgement, ethics or human connection, which are still at the heart of good legal practice. It is a tool, not a takeover.
What are you looking forward to the most in the coming year?
I am a big fan of Christmas, so the holiday season is always something I get excited about – especially the chance to slow down and spend quality time with family and friends over the summer break. Beyond that, I’m curious to see what 2026 brings, both in terms of personal growth and professional opportunities.
If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?
It’s hard to pick just one day – there have been so many great moments for different reasons. Some stand out because of the people, others because of something I achieved or experienced but becoming a mum probably tops it!
