Piper Alderman acts on $180m power contract

Piper Alderman advised ElectraNet on a contract that will connect a major copper, silver, and gold mine with the South Australian electricity grid.

The national firm advised ElectraNet, which has entered into a contract with CIMIC’s UGL to design, construct, and commission high voltage substations and transmission lines for the project. As part of the project that connects the Prominent Hill Mine to the grid, switching stations and about 300kms of high-voltage transmission lines will be built.

Piper Alderman said that the UGL deal is expected to generate $180m in revenue over two years. The financial details of the Prominent Hill transmission connection agreement with OZ Minerals have not been disclosed.

The law firm also advised ElectraNet on its build, own, operate, and maintain arrangement, as well as its connection arrangement, with OZ Minerals.

“This transmission infrastructure not only provides an end-to-end network solution for OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill, but also presents opportunities for future load and generation projects in the upper north region of South Australia. It’s great to see the ElectraNet team working with industry to deliver such significant contestable works in a competitive market,” Piper Alderman partner Martin Lovell said.

The lead partner was supported by senior associate Juniper Watson and associate Mary-Anne Sotiropoulos. The team has earned praise from ElectraNet.

“Piper Alderman’s support to the ElectraNet team, combined with legal leadership in developing and negotiating the transmission connection agreement between ElectraNet and OZ Minerals, proved invaluable in achieving a successful outcome for all parties. The Piper Alderman team integrated themselves seamlessly and were prepared to go the extra mile when needed,” the company said.

“It was a pleasure to work with Martin and his team over the last six months. Their professionalism, commercial mindedness, tactful approach, attention to detail, flexibility and availability make them a trusted advisor to ElectraNet. We look forward to working with Martin and the Piper Alderman team on future transmission connection opportunities.”
