Judge to return to the District Court

A long-serving judge of the District Court is returning to the bench.

John James Dashwood Strettell has been appointed an acting District Court judge by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy.

The judge will also exercise the jurisdiction over the Family Court. He commences his one-year term on 6 October.

Strettell served as a District Court judge for 24 years until his retirement in 2014.

For five years, he served as administrative judge of the Family Court for the Southern Region. He also served as executive judge, responsible for the District Court judges of the South Island, for seven years.
