John Key in shock resignation

Prime Minister John Key has announced his resignation at a press conference today.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has announced he is resigning, according to the NZ Herald. 

Key informed his Cabinet of his decision this morning and has said, "This is the hardest decision I've ever made and I don't know what I'll do next."

The Herald reported that Key's wife had asked him to resign as Prime Minister.

Minister of Finance Bill English is expected take over the Prime Minister's role while Steven Joyce is expected to step into his finance role.

The National Party caucus will decide on a new party leader and Prime Minster on December 12.

Key has been the leader of the National party since 2006.
