In-house counsel feeling more confident
Lawyers working for corporates generally feel that they enjoy the same status as those working in law firms according to a new report.
The feeling is shared by in-house counsel across Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Middle East and Africa but not in Europe, the Association of Corporate Counsel’s global trends survey found.
Most in-house lawyers (80%) said that their relationship with external law firms was positive, this is more likely among in-house teams of 50 lawyers of fewer.
Respondents report that, with broader responsibilities within corporates, there is greater potential for career development and better compensation currently, although only 43% are happy with their formal career development plans.
However, men are still faring better than women in corporate teams. With women more likely to have taken temporary leave from their work, often for dependent care, a third then find it hard to find a satisfactory job.
Men are also more likely to occupy higher paid roles with women more likely to occupy lower paid ones.

A pair of London lawyers who moved from King & Wood Mallesons to Ashurst a year ago, are on the move again.
Corporate real estate specialists Darren Rogers and Patrick Williams will join Fried Frank, adding significant experience to the US-headquartered firm.
The duo has been working together for more than a decade and have been responsible for many high-profile property investment transactions in the UK and Europe, advising leading domestic and international property investors and sponsors.
Orrick adds to Hong Kong M&A team
Mark Lehmkuhler has joined the M&A and private equity team at Orrick in Hong Kong as a partner.
He joins from Davis Polk where he spent almost two decades, the last nine as partner. His practice which focuses on M&A and private equity transactions, debt restructurings and other complex cross-border transactions.
Former Eversheds global automotive head joins Squire Patton Boggs
Squire Patton Boggs has hired Simon James, former global head of automotive at Eversheds Sutherland, as a partner in its IP and Tech practice.
He will be based in Birmingham UK, the city where he led the tech and sourcing practice at DLA Piper prior to his role at Eversheds.
