High profile duo heads new China practice for international firm
Osbourne Clarke has entered the Mainland China market by admitting new Shanghai firm Zhang Yu & Partners to its network. The local firm is jointly managed by Guohua Zhang, a former partner at Bird & Bird; and Steve Yu, former managing partner of US firm Armstrong Teasdale’s Shanghai office.

The tie-up is the next step on the international firm’s expansion in Asia, which included an association with OC Queen Street in Singapore last year, a Hong Kong association with Koh Vass & Co, and a close relationship with India’s BTG Legal.

“This is a major step forward in strengthening our international business as we now have a robust Asian regional offering from offices in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Singapore,” said Simon Beswick, International CEO at Osborne Clarke.

Name change for Hong Kong firm as association completes
International firm RPC’s operation in Hong Kong is to change its name following the successful completion of the required 5-year association period.

The London-headquarted firm has operated in association with local firm Smyth & Co since 2012 and the office now has a headcount of 70 following recent hires from Sidley Austin and Mayer Brown.

The firm will be known in Hong Kong as Reynolds Porter Chamberlain and will continue to be led by David Smyth, senior partner Hong Kong.

DLA Piper, Bird & Bird announce new Asia-Pac partners
Four new partners have joined the partnership of DLA Piper in Asia Pacific while Bird & Bird has added two partners.

The DLA Piper partners are Jock Cambell (litigation & regulatory) and Rhys Davies (finance & projects) in Perth; and Windson Li (tax) and Vivian Liu (corporate) in Beijing.

The promotions are effective 1st May 2017 and complement those made in the US from the start of 2017 and in EMEA from 1st May. In total, 46 lawyers have been promoted so far this year.

Meanwhile, IP lawyer Troy Gurnett makes partner at Bird & Bird in Sydney.
