The move is expected to help enhance Treaty based Māori-Crown relationships
Former Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui chair Gerrard Albert (Whanganui, Ngā Paerangi) has joined the Waitangi Tribunal to fill a vacancy.
According to Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka, Albert will be part of the Tribunal for three years.
“With his extensive experience in Treaty matters, Gerrard will bring invaluable knowledge and leadership to the Tribunal. His appointment will ensure the Tribunal continues its important work in hearing and reporting Treaty claims in a timely manner”, Potaka said.
Albert brings more than two decades of Treaty settlement negotiations experience. He also worked in natural resource management for over 30 years and played a key role in the Whanganui River Settlement.
Potaka added that Albert’s appointment was expected to help enhance Treaty based Māori-Crown relationships.
“Having a diverse range of expertise on the Tribunal is key to ensuring we continue to deliver effective and timely outcomes for Māori and the Crown”, Potaka said.
In January, the Waitangi Tribunal welcomed eight additions.
