A heavy-hitter joins the firm
DLA Piper has launched a tax practice in the Middle East with the hire of partner Ton van Doremalen in Dubai.
Van Doremalen, who has more than 16 years’ experience, joined the global firm from Withers Middle East. His clients include United Arab Emirates-based private equity firms and family offices and Gulf Cooperation Council-based (GCC) sovereign wealth funds and corporate groups.
His experience includes outbound work on M&A transactions in Europe, Africa, the US, and Asia. He also advised on projects in the GCC and the wider Middle East. He also works on inbound matters, projects and company establishment in the Middle East. He has international tax structuring expertise in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the UK, and the UAE.
The firm welcomes van Doremalen at a time of highly anticipated tax changes and regulation in the Middle East, said Roderick Bouwman, DLA Piper’s global co-chair of tax.
“We see the creation of a dedicated tax practice as invaluable as the region continues to develop as a major international business hub,” said Peter Somekh, DLA Piper’s regional managing partner in the Middle East.
The appointment and launch of a tax practice in the Middle East follows DLA Piper’s launch of a tax practice in South Africa in August with the appointment of Andrew Lewis as tax director in Johannesburg. The firm also recently appointed Andrea Di Dio as head of tax in Rome.
