While top tier firms continued to dominate this year's Chambers rankings, Band one individuals were singled out at more than 20 firms across the country
Chambers has released its 2014 Asia Pacific Guide, showing Bell Gully, Chapman Tripp and Russell McVeagh, continue to hold tight to top rankings.
Bell Gully received 12 ‘Band one’ rankings out of 13 possible categories (not including Dispute Resolution: The Bar, Tax: The Bar, or Shipping) with Chapman Tripp and Russell McVeagh in hot pursuit at nine and eight Band one rankings respectively.
Other notable contenders included Simpson Grierson, with five top rankings and Buddle Findlay, with two.
However, rankings of individual lawyers showed New Zealand’s legal talent is far more widespread, with lawyers from more than twenty firms receiving ‘Senior Statesman’, ‘Star Individual’, or ‘Band One’ titles.
Aside from the top tier firms (Bell Gully claimed 17 top individuals, Chapman Tripp 14 and Russell McVeagh 12), notable players included Simpson Grierson, with nine top-ranked lawyers, Buddle Findlay with six and AJ Park with three. DLA Phillips Fox , Greenwood Roche Chisnall , Hudson Gavin Martin , Lowndes Jordan and Minter Ellison Rudd Watts also claimed two top-ranked individuals each.
The release follows Monday night’s announcement that Chapman Tripp had received Chambers’ New Zealand Law Firm of the Year award, with the global ranking company claiming the long-established firm has ‘more than maintained’ its reputation over the past year.
“In the corporate sphere, it was at the forefront of the government's reforms of the energy market, acting for Mighty River Power during its landmark flotation. The firm also added to its laurels in the financial space, further enhancing its standing as the go-to outfit for complex debt capital markets and other high-profile financing issues.”
