Aedeen Boadita-Cormican named as commissioner of Transport Accident Investigation Commission

James Meager, associate transport minister, has announced the appointment of Aedeen Boadita-Cormican, a barrister and a member of Clifton Chambers, as a new commissioner of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC), a position she will hold until 31 May 2031. 

According to the government’s news release, Boadita-Cormican takes over the role from Bernadette Arapere, who resigned from the board last November upon her appointment as a District Court judge

“I thank Judge Arapere for the expertise, integrity and professionalism she brought to the role, and congratulate her again on her new appointment,” Meager said. 

Boadita-Cormican’s more than 35 years of global legal experience have encompassed inquiries, inquests, and advice provided to regulators. 

“I am very pleased Ms Boadita-Cormican has agreed to join TAIC and undertake this important function,” Meager said in the news release. 

In the TAIC board, Boadita-Cormican joins David Clarke, chief commissioner; Stephen Davies Howard, deputy chief commissioner; and Paula Rose, commissioner. 

Calling Boadita-Cormican “highly capable,” Meager said she “offers an approach that works well with her fellow Commissioners.”

According to the government’s news release, Boadita-Cormican’s previous involvement in the transport sector has included serving as general counsel and company secretary for the Accident Compensation Corporation. 

Her governance experience has included acting as a director of Southern Response Earthquake Services Ltd and holding governance positions in non-governmental organisations. She has also served as acting treasury solicitor and senior crown counsel at Crown Law. 

According to her profile on Clifton Chambers, Boadita-Cormican has been a courtroom advocate in both New Zealand and the UK. She was born in Ireland. 

According to her LinkedIn profile, she earned an LLB from Trinity College Dublin and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. She gained admission to the bar in England in 1990. She worked as a barrister sole until 1996. 

Upon moving to Kuwait, Boadita-Cormican served as an in-house lawyer at the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation for 11 years. She dealt with significant transnational corporate and commercial transactions. 

Since relocating to New Zealand with her family in 2008, she has spearheaded legal teams within the New Zealand public service. She is a chartered member of the Institute of Directors, New Zealand.
