Best Legal Tech and Legal Service Providers in Australia and New Zealand | Service Provider Awards

Doing the dirty work

Top lawyers don’t need any help to be lawyers. What truly sets the best legal tech and service providers apart isn’t teaching lawyers the law but making everything else about the job easier and more efficient.

Whether it’s automating templates, launching creative advertising campaigns or offering smart advice on scaling up operations, the Australasian Lawyer/NZ Lawyer Service Provider 2025 winners are giving lawyers back what matters most: time and focus. This means lawyers can channel their sought-after skills exactly where they’re needed most.

“The gold standard for assessing whether a service provider is truly delivering value for money goes beyond price – it’s about measurable impact, alignment and partnership,” says Andrew McDuff, president of the Australasian Legal Technology Alliance (ALTA).

The best legal service providers in Australia and New Zealand collectively cite their key differentiators as:

  • client centricity

  • innovation

  • transparency

  • security

  • breadth of service

  • commercial value

Earning a spot on the prestigious winners’ list wasn’t easy. Each firm was rigorously evaluated on the quality and effectiveness of its service delivery, with a special emphasis on how much it streamlined and enhanced lawyers’ daily work.

Efficiency and reliability are non-negotiable for Trans-Tasman lawyers. They want service providers who fit seamlessly into their routines – no distractions, just smooth support that lets them get on with the business of law. This is echoed in Thomson Reuters’ The ROI of Legal Tech & AI Report 2025, where 1,000 legal professionals shared just how crucial these qualities are in their day-to-day practice.

Bigger and better is not the default mindset of the leading service providers.

One winner, Harriss Wagner, actually dissuaded a client who was on the verge of signing a multi-million-dollar software deal, as it could see that the client’s existing system simply required reconfiguration to achieve the necessary functionality and meet its aim.

While another winner, Lawcadia, automates line-by-line invoice review and enforces rate card compliance, so clients can ensure that billing aligns with agreed panel terms and benefit from granular reporting. This streamlines approvals and dramatically reduces the time required for invoice review by up to 75%, freeing up legal teams to focus on strategic and advisory work.

Louise Hall-Strutt, owner and managing director of Altitude Recruitment, who is also recognised by AL/NZL as a Service Provider, highlights how being selective and deliberate is more important than numbers.

“I don’t run a high-volume desk. I partner with a curated client base, ensuring I have the time and energy to invest in meaningful relationships, deliver excellent outcomes and focus on long-term fit,” she says. “For candidates, I act as a sounding board, offering honest advice, market insight and confidence-boosting guidance throughout the recruitment process.”

Similarly, Aspen Legal was founded to offer a genuine alternative to the dominant secondment providers in the market, many of which operate as extensions of top-tier law firms or are driven by offshore private equity interests focused on profit. The firm has a locally owned, people-first model that prioritises relationships, quality and long-term sustainability over scale and short-term growth.

These examples highlight the significant impact the best service providers can make.

“There is a fundamental difference between being a great lawyer and running a great law firm. Legal expertise delivers strong outcomes for clients, but building a profitable, scalable and sustainable business requires a very different skill set,” says Glenn Marvin, of another of 2025’s Service Providers, Connect The Dots NZ.

Lawyers are not blinded by gimmicks and trends shown by Agile Market Intelligence, which revealed that 53% of Australian legal organisations have not adopted new technology over the past five years, while nearly half of sole traders spend less than $5,000 annually on legal technology.

This proves that the leading Service Providers offer value for money and a hard-line impact, benefitting both law firms and their clients.

Prioritising scalability

Kris Cook, continuous improvement manager at Tavendale + Partners, has observed a significant uptick in demand for project management services, particularly for small- to mid-sized firms.

She says, “The project management concept is increasingly important, especially for small- to mid-sized firms that generally don’t have the expertise in-house. So, the supplier in essence becomes an extension of one’s team, not just a ‘supplier.’”

Adaptation services are also paramount for clients looking to scale, says Cook. “For us, value for money is delivering to the brief but beyond the expected. Practically, this is most often evidenced in the way a service provider ‘anticipates’ and plans for all of the additional things that they know/have learned through their experience that you may not necessarily.”

Best Legal Tech and Legal Service Providers in Australia and New Zealand 2025

LawHawk

Location: Wellington, NZ

Category: Other – legal technology – advice and automation solutions

Testimonial: “We were averaging five to six weeks to get drafts to clients, and now we’re averaging three, which includes drafting and multiple reviews by staff members. It used to take a few days to complete drafting an entire estate plan, but now our drafter sometimes gets them done the day we receive payment.”  – Law firm client

LawHawk is transforming how law firms modernise and scale, blending deep legal expertise with cutting-edge technology to streamline workflows and minimise risk.

At the heart of its operations is a commitment to eliminating wasted time on repetitive tasks. By harnessing automation, it empowers lawyers to focus on delivering real value to clients, unlocking better outcomes and a powerful competitive edge.

With two decades as a lawyer, managing director Gene Turner saw firsthand the gap in accessible, lawyer-friendly automation tools. That insight inspired him to launch LawHawk.

The firm stands out for its collaborative, pragmatic and results-driven approach. It doesn’t just drop in tools but partners with clients to design and implement solutions that seamlessly integrate with existing systems and deliver measurable business benefits.

“I felt that 10 years ago it would be worthwhile to actually build a business that helps lawyers do better work for their clients and get rid of all the other issues that can be traced back to the billable hour,” says Turner. “To help firms get better outcomes, we make sure we don’t just focus on what we do, but we also understand the other dependencies.”

Claire Hunter
“We are experts in law and automation and focused on the outcomes our customers need. We start with the technology they have and only recommend new technology where there are gaps”
Gene TurnerLawHawk

By utilising market-leading products such as HotDocs and Microsoft 365, LawHawk streamlines complex estate planning, lending documents and licensing options for legal documents like wills, powers of attorney and contracts.

These simple yet effective solutions allow lawyers to optimise their time, says Turner. “We use a product called Cognito Forms, which can be integrated into SharePoint. It’s not bleeding-edge AI-type stuff, but it’s the type of solution that actually makes a big difference to the day-to-day work for our clients, because it saves them hours and hours and requires a lot less initial investment than a whole new system.”

A recent project for LawHawk was the integration of OutSystems and HotDocs Advanced for the Law Association in New Zealand. “Previously, they were creating documents using PDF. It’s quite a big shift forward in terms of capability, but it doesn’t require anybody to suddenly jump from zero to full AI. It still gives you a lot of structure and control over the documents, but a lot more flexibility than what they previously had,” explains Turner. “The focus is on results, reducing manual work, increasing accuracy and speeding up delivery without adding overhead.”

From fast turnaround template automation to full process transformations, LawHawk’s solutions align with how legal and contract management teams want to work. Turner says, “Our initial advice is a key differentiator. We can quickly diagnose a customer’s situation and make sure they don’t waste months and a lot of money trying to implement solutions that simply won’t work and deliver value for them.”

LawHawk has begun expanding outside of New Zealand and Australia by working with firms that deal with complex estate planning in the US. “They had a previous automated solution, and what we’ve done for them has taken about half of the time out again in terms of how quickly they can do it, because we’ve gone a lot further,” says Turner.

The benefits that LawHawk brings to the table are universal – and that’s enabling lawyers to be more efficient. Turner adds, “We help them become more successful because they can charge customers less in legal fees and therefore win more work.”

Impact: Delivering practical solutions for legal teams by prioritising time savings and cost-effectiveness over adopting the latest technology. This achieves significant efficiency gains without large upfront investments.

Harriss Wagner

Location: Sydney, AU

Category: Other – legal services – management consulting – business transformation

Testimonial: “The Harriss Wagner team is a long-time leader in legal tech and a trusted partner to so many firms across Australia. Their depth of expertise and genuine passion for transforming practice management through technology are on full display.” – David Cooper, Macquarie Bank

For 25 years, Harriss Wagner has been the go-to partner for private law firms, corporate legal teams, barristers’ chambers and public prosecution agencies, earning a reputation as a trusted consultant and advisor.

It drives transformation by boosting productivity, streamlining operations and elevating performance across the board. With disciplined methodologies and practical, budget-conscious strategies, it consistently delivers quality results that make a measurable difference.

The impact speaks for itself, as in 2024–25, Harriss Wagner achieved an impressive 31% growth in fees, underscoring the value and results it brings.

“We invest deeply in understanding what lies ahead, working proactively with our clients to prepare for future demands, and their mission is to provide clarity during uncertainty, enabling clients to make confident decisions while navigating the unknowns of innovation and transformation,” says Amanda Harriss, founder and client services partner.

The firm uses an engagement model that has a three-pillar framework:

  • diagnose

  • design

  • deliver

It works by initially planning a path forward and ensuring the client is fully on board. “For the design part, there are real challenges with people only seeing their current way of doing things and not necessarily seeing what the technology is going to look like when the changes have occurred. We’re taking them into a world of imagining what the future is going to look like and designing solutions to actually have that new way of working as an outcome,” adds Harriss.

Claire Hunter
“We provide quality service, deploying best practice methodologies and tools tailored to suit our clients, while offering affordable and competitive pricing. It is the balance of quality services and affordability that we have found entices our clients to experience what we believe is the Harriss Wagner difference”
Amanda HarrissHarriss Wagner

The analysis leads to a strategic roadmap complete with cost projections and a return on investment forecast. Harriss Wagner additionally employs structured tools for system evaluations, enabling clients to assess software demonstrations objectively and with clarity. Facilitating firm-wide coaching sessions also ensures that each component of a firm is pulling in the same direction.

“It’s about workshopping, but it’s not just ideas. We’re really talking about what their future looks like and the steps to get there,” says Harriss. “We invest deeply in understanding what lies ahead.”

Another obstacle is changing mindsets, as some law firms have a stickiness to how they’ve always done things.

An example of Harriss Wagner’s expertise and ability to guide transitions was a major remediation project with a client who had endured a failed implementation. Initially lacking trust, the client soon experienced the payback of the planned strategy. Over time, Harriss Wagner restored operational stability and repaired internal and external relationships necessary for the client’s ongoing success.

Impact: Quick wins are identified and implemented alongside longer-term, more complex changes, allowing law firms to realise immediate benefits while progressing towards substantial transformation.

Law In Order

Location: Sydney, AU

Category: Legal Services

Testimonial: “We recently worked with Law In Order on a large eDiscovery job using Relativity to review 30 GB of data with a three-week deadline. I would rate the experience with 10/10 and would definitely use them again.” – Jeffrey Lucas, CJM Lawyers

Law In Order delivers comprehensive end-to-end documentation and digital solutions tailored for the legal sector.

But its expertise doesn’t stop there; it offers expert consulting on data strategies, workflows and best practices, ensuring clients are always ahead of the curve. Its secure data collection services handle electronically stored information from a wide range of sources, while early case assessment helps clients evaluate data upfront, shaping case strategy and cutting review costs.

When it comes to electronic data processing, the firm ensures large datasets are handled with accuracy, speed and defensibility. Its managed document review services are customised to each case, and technology-assisted reviews harness the power of machine learning and AI to make the process faster and more efficient.

Clients benefit from scalable, secure hosted review platforms, advanced analytics for rapid insights and cutting-edge AI tools that support review, classification and analysis, which deliver smarter, more informed outcomes.

The firm also has several advanced eDiscovery platforms to offer clients:

  • RelativityOne Gold Partner: Offering features such as email threading, textual near duplicates, concept searching, continuous active learning, assisted review, review messenger services and AV for streaming videos in the viewer.

  • Nuix Partner: Supporting litigation projects with multi-user reporting and tracking, rapid start-up, training and support and cross-functional eDiscovery workflows.

  • Cicero: World’s first private AI solution for the legal sector, developed by Automatise with Law In Order as the implementation partner, bringing an innovative, private AI solution tailored specifically for the legal industry. As the first of its kind, CICERO automates tasks such as document review, investigations and chronology creation – tasks that typically consume extensive time and resources – while ensuring top-level data security and compliance

Rey Peñalosa, head of the eHearings group, says Law In Order provides clients with crucial peace of mind. “With the newer clients that engage with us, the first questions they ask are, ‘How is the application developed? Where is it hosted? What are the securities around it?’ And when we do have those conversations, we alleviate all their concerns.”

Law In Order offers a Smart Bundle platform that integrates multiple legal technology functions (e-discovery, transcription, data management and video conferencing) into a single solution, unlike most providers who focus on just one area. It removes the need for separate applications for each task and encompasses the three phases of litigation to provide a seamless experience.

“It has been my experience and our firm’s experience that it’s possible to do well and do good at the same time”
Rey PeñalosaLaw In Order

Dispensing technological education is another key component, as lawyers are not always fully proficient in how to use the newest technology. This is especially important with the increased adoption of AI, as improper use of the technology can lead to mistakes.

“When they go to study law, a lot of the technological learning isn’t done. It’s changing now, and it has been for some time, but it’s still a slow process,” explains Peñalosa. “We understand that AI isn’t perfect. We train the legal industry about that and say, ‘You can’t just take what’s coming out of AI as a true fact.’ There’s always a review process to improve their understanding of AI so they see it more as a tool, as opposed to it replacing workflows.”

The firm’s value comes down to its four core values:

  • Advanced technology solutions: Providing a secure, flexible and powerful platform that enhances a law firm’s ability to manage and analyse data effectively.

  • Personalised service: Tailoring an approach that ensures that each client receives solutions specifically designed to meet their individual requirements. This commitment to personalised service is reflected in exceptional client satisfaction and the ability to meet tight deadlines, for example, printing 115,500 pages within 24 hours.

  • Security and compliance: Key measures include ISO/IEC 2700. Data centres are ISO 27001 certified, with critical data centres holding IRAP, SOC 1 Type I, and SOC 2 Type II certifications.

  • Excellence in service and community: Active participation in the Justice for Change Program, providing pro bono services to victims of discrimination, further underscores a commitment to excellence and social responsibility.

Peñalosa says, “A lot of applications can be narrow in their use case, and what we find is that we can customise and teach them how to use it in the way they do. As you will have one law firm that will run eDiscovery in one way and another that will do it completely differently.”

Impact: Continuously evolving to meet the demands of the legal landscape. Committed to customer service, quality and security positions, ensuring that every project is completed with reliability, efficiency and top-quality support solutions.

Connect The Dots NZ

Location: Auckland, NZ

Category: Other – legal services – law firm growth and productivity consulting

Testimonial: “Engaging Connect The Dots to drive our business strategy as well as integrated marketing strategy has been one of the best decisions I have made since founding Norling Law. The strong business acumen and structured approach to growth have given us such confidence in delivering on our goals that I have been able to make decisions that I may have otherwise held off on and hindered our growth as a business.” – Brent Norling, Norling Law

Helping law firms thrive in today’s business landscape is at the core of Connect The Dots NZ’s mission.

“There’s a world of difference between practicing law and running a law firm as a business,” says Marvin. “You can have brilliant legal minds, but without business know-how, sustainable growth is a challenge.”

Claire Hunter
“The primary way that we work with law firms is through a quarterly coaching and consulting engagement where we help them build that long-term vision”
Glenn MarvinConnect The Dots NZ

Connect The Dots partners closely with law firm leaders, aligning strategy, people and execution to drive profitable, sustainable growth. “Our signature approach is a quarterly coaching and consulting program,” Marvin explains. “We work side by side with firms to define their long-term vision and map out the steps to get there.”

The results are self-explanatory, as for one recent client, Connect The Dots helped boost monthly consultations from 30 to 40 to an impressive average of over 120, proving the power of blending legal expertise with sharp business strategy. The service provider’s core offerings include:

  • Scaling up coaching and strategic advisory: Assisting in developing a clear vision and creating an operating rhythm that drives performance. This includes strategy workshops, leadership alignment programs and execution reviews.

  • Marketing and growth execution: Designing and delivering marketing action plans that turn strategy into results. From brand positioning to lead generation, helping firms grow their client base and build a scalable business model.

  • Resource centre and tools: Diagnostic tools, frameworks and resources to support continuous improvement between engagements. Provides the expertise and capacity many firms lack internally.

Connect The Dots’ digital marketing solutions increasingly make use of social media platforms Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and even Spotify. The campaigns with the most impact on growth reflect a firm’s identity authentically, Marvin says, as they resonate with the type of clients firms are looking to attract. “The most important thing is being true to your real brand, not creating fake imagery that is completely disconnected from who you are.”

There are five points of difference that enable the firm to stand out compared to other competing service providers:

  • Bridging the practice and business of law: Commercial acumen, operational discipline and growth expertise that most law firms lack internally.

  • Strategy-first, execution-backed: Combining strategic coaching with delivery capability, ensuring plans are executed to achieve measurable outcomes.

  • Deep legal industry understanding: Experience of working with law firms.

  • Proven frameworks for growth: As Scaling Up certified coaches, they bring globally recognised methodologies that support law firm leaders to scale confidently and sustainably.

  • Obsessed approach: Success measured by business impact – improved profitability, stronger leadership alignment and operational efficiency.

Connect the Dots uses all of these to help clients avoid the pitfalls and common issues.

Marvin explains, “I’ve seen many law firms in the first five or ten years dig themselves into a cash flow hole because they’re great at invoicing but terrible at collection. So, in those cases, we provide both advice and coaching on how important that second part is.”

Connect the Dots also provides leadership coaching to firms to ensure scalable growth, and Marvin highlights the importance of accountability, as he finds firms can sometimes reach a stage of complacency if their long-term business goals are not being addressed.

“The right resources with the right culture are incredibly important. And when you get that environment, profitability follows really quickly.”

Impact: Creating a productive environment to attract talent and enable leaders to focus on their strengths, which in turn drives profitability and avoids inefficiency as firms grow.

Conclusion

“Providers who can guide firms through adoption, training and cultural change are critical to ensuring long-term success,” adds ALTA’s McDuff. “In short, service providers are no longer on the periphery; they’re at the centre of how modern law firms compete and grow.”

The most successful legal service providers in New Zealand and Australia share a blend of specialisation, relentless client focus, technological innovation, integrated service models and, most importantly, value for money.

They harness all of these factors to enable their clients to remain at the forefront of the legal profession, providing them with the expertise and tools to focus their attention on what lawyers are engaged to do: practice the law and advocate for clients.

Methodology

In July 2025, Australasian Lawyer and NZ Lawyer opened the window to nominations for their fourth annual Service Provider Awards, inviting service providers across Australia and New Zealand to put forward their companies for consideration.

The awards spotlight the providers that are delivering the most effective and transformative legal solutions across areas such as legal tech, litigation support and consulting, recruiting, staffing, and outsourcing, and other legal services.

The editorial and research teams across both publications reviewed the vendors’ submissions, and nominees were evaluated mainly on the strength and process of their service delivery, with the most important factor being how these providers made legal professionals’ lives more efficient through their products and services. The judges also considered the providers’ innovativeness and R&D commitment.

A total of 22 providers stood out based on these criteria, becoming the 2025 winners of the AL and NZL Service Provider Awards.
