Gilbert + Tobin has announced the establishment of a new dedicated tax controversy and tax dispute resolution practice through the appointment of Dioni Perera as a Melbourne-based partner in its disputes and investigations group. 

Coming from EY, Perera brings with her a five-member team, which includes consultant Peter van den Broek, lawyers Alper Gokoglu, Alistair Thompson, and William Li, and graduate Robyn Flynn. 

“Dioni brings specialised and strategic expertise to G+T that will help our domestic and international clients resolve complex matters in an increasingly dynamic tax landscape,” said Danny Gilbert, G+T co-founder and chairman, in a news release. 

The firm shared that Perera’s addition seeks to strengthen its tax disputes offering and deepen its national disputes and tax platforms. 

G+T added that Perera’s appointment aims to enable the firm to help clients navigate the increasing scrutiny and complexity within the tax landscape and manage risk, controversy, and regulatory engagement within the evolving environment.

G+T noted that other recent additions to its disputes and investigations group included Daniel Moloney in Melbourne and Holly Sara in Sydney.

Perera’s work has also spanned a range of tax issues impacting large businesses, including the general anti-avoidance rule, transfer pricing, capital revenue, capital gains tax, capital allowances, tax losses, research and development, and withholding tax. 

Her practice has covered sectors facing intensifying regulatory pressure and enforcement activity, such as mining, infrastructure, energy, renewables, and consumer markets. 

As an experienced litigator, Perera has handled matters before the Federal Court of Australia, the High Court of Australia, and the Administrative Review Tribunal.
