Thomson Reuters launches AI tools for legal and tax professionals in Australia

Thomson Reuters has unveiled two AI innovations – Westlaw Advantage Australia and ONESOURCE+ – for Australian legal, tax, and compliance professionals at its third annual SYNERGY Sydney conference.

Vishal Bali, managing director for Asia and emerging markets at Thomson Reuters, said the products were designed to meet rising expectations of accountability in regulated industries.

“In regulated professions, AI can’t just be impressive – it has to be accountable. Legal, tax and compliance professionals in Australia are moving beyond experimentation and demanding AI they can rely on for high-stakes work. By bringing Westlaw Advantage Australia and ONESOURCE+ to market, we’re embedding fiduciary-grade agentic AI directly into the workflows professionals use every day – grounded in authoritative content, deep domain expertise, and governed by design,” Bali said.

Both products are powered by CoCounsel, Thomson Reuters’ AI technology that is embedded across the company’s legal and corporate solutions. A news release noted that CoCounsel applies expert-defined validation shaped by more than 4,500 subject-matter experts. It combines frontier AI models with proprietary technology and structured datasets to maintain system-level oversight.

Westlaw Advantage Australia

Westlaw Advantage Australia features Deep Research, which uses advanced agentic AI to plan and perform multi-step legal research. The system autonomously develops legal research strategies, explains its process, cites sources, and structures argument foundations, all under human oversight. It automates aspects of legal research, helping professionals analyse and interpret information more efficiently. It also includes a Litigation Document Analyser, which summarises arguments, flags mischaracterisations of law, and highlights key points for response or revision.

The product has been launched in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans to expand Deep Research to Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Zealand within 12 months.

ONESOURCE+

ONESOURCE+ is the company’s Intelligent Compliance Network, now live across Asia-Pacific and MENA, connecting tax, trade, legal, and risk solutions. Designed as a scalable network rather than a single platform, it links data, content, and workflows to coordinate compliance activities for corporations worldwide.

Key features coming to Australia include ONESOURCE Global Indirect Compliance, which uses agentic AI to automate multi-jurisdictional filings, and ONESOURCE Sales and Use Tax AI, which promises to reduce preparation time by 40%–60%.

Additional next-generation capabilities within CoCounsel Tax and ONESOURCE+ are planned for later in 2026.
