The cream of the crop in Australia’s insurance law industry unveiled

Our first-ever 5-Star Insurance Law report highlights the top specialists in a challenging year

The cream of the crop in Australia’s insurance law industry unveiled

The leading insurance law specialists in Australia’s legal industry have been given the spotlight in Australasian Lawyer and Insurance Business Australia’s inaugural 5-Star Insurance Law Firms and Lawyers report, recognising their performance over a landmark year for the field.

Businesses everywhere faced problems related to their insurance obligations over 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and business interruption insurance test cases grabbed the attention of the legal industry as lawyers, their clients and insurers tried to navigate the new terrain created by the pandemic. In the process, insurance specialists had to learn how to identify and avoid the risks related to coverage, policies and claims in the new environment.

Claims related to travel, events, cyber and digital risk, contingency and employment were also leading claims in the industry over the past year. Lockdowns spurred greater scrutiny of policy wordings, and remote working arrangements created greater cyber-risks with the rise of phishing and social engineering.

As a result, insurance law became one of the few areas that bloomed in a challenging time for the legal profession as a whole. The 5-Star firms and lawyers on our list are those that through their incredible work in the insurance law space were able to make significant contributions to the field.

The 22 law firms and 21 lawyers named as first-ever 5-Star Insurance Law awardees were determined over a 15-week period through industry interviews and surveys. They were rated based on work quality, specialist expertise and client service quality.

Among the awardees is Gilchrist Connell, which was recognised by insurance industry leaders as a firm that met many of the needs insurers valued in the firms with whom they worked.
