Oscar Pistorius has filed an application to appeal his murder conviction for killing Reeva Steenkamp.
Oscar Pistorius has filed an application to South Africa’s Constitutional Court to appeal his murder charge for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day back in 2013.
“We filed the application for leave to appeal today,” lawyer Brian Webber told Bloomberg News.
The Paralympian shot Steenkamp with four hollow-point bullets in his bathroom.
He was originally charged with culpable homicide but that was overturned in December by the South African Supreme Court of Appeal. Now, Pistorius could face a 15-year jail term if the appeal is unsuccessful.
He is currently serving part of his five-year sentence for culpable homicide under house arrest at his uncle’s home after he was granted 10,000 rand bail to remain there.
Pistorius won six Paralympic gold medals and was the first double-amputee runner to compete at the Olympic Games. He has since lost major sponsorship deals with companies including Nike Inc., Luxottica Group SpA’s Oakley and Ossur hf.
