The Law Society of New South Wales has conferred Jim Marsden – a Western Sydney solicitor whose efforts have helped the Macarthur region become one of Australia’s swiftest growing urban centres – with life membership.

“On behalf of the state’s solicitor profession, I congratulate Mr Marsden on this award of life membership,” said Ronan MacSweeney, the NSW law society’s president, in a media release.

Since earning admission to the legal practice in 1975, Marsden has practised as a solicitor and as a law society member for more than half a century.

“Life membership of the Law Society of NSW recognises more than longevity in the law,” MacSweeney said. “It’s a recognition of a solicitor member’s distinguished and meritorious service to the administration of justice and extends to their achievements outside the law.”

Calling Marsden an “exemplar of service in the solicitor profession,” MacSweeney highlighted his contributions to the legal profession and the Macarthur community. MacSweeney shared that Marsden helped modernise conveyancing law, including through the law society’s Conveyancing Task Force, as well as developed a reputation for his own property law practice.

“Mr Marsden’s achievements have been astonishing, from advising on greenfield developments in Sydney’s south-west to guiding the partnership between the Balmain and Western Suburbs Rugby League clubs that resulted in the establishment of the Wests Tigers, and everything in between,” MacSweeney said.

MacSweeney noted that Marsden won the law society’s Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award in 2012 for supporting access to justice for vulnerable community members through pro bono legal work.

MacSweeney added that Marsden has mentored generations of early-career lawyers and shown a significant commitment to business, sports, artistic, and charitable communities in Macarthur and beyond.

“This commitment was recognised in the 2013 Queens Birthday Honours list with an Order of Australia Medal ‘for service to the community of Campbelltown’,” MacSweeney said in the law society’s media release

Marsdens Law Group

Jim Marsden – alongside his solicitor brother, the late John Marsden – established Marsdens Law Group in western Sydney. At the firm, Jim Marsden served as principal since 1980 and became senior partner in 2006.

In a news release, Marsdens Law Group congratulated Jim Marsden for receiving life membership at the law society.

“This special honour is reserved for solicitors whose professional attainments, expertise, leadership, and service to the community stand out,” the firm said in its news release. “Jim’s commitment and contributions have made a lasting impact on the legal profession, and this recognition is so well deserved.”

Since its creation, Marsdens Law Group has expanded from its Campbelltown headquarters to other NSW locations – specifically, in Camden, Liverpool, Oran Park, and Sydney.
