Native title specialist firm Chalk & Behrendt Lawyers & Consultants launches Indigenous scholarship

Native title specialist firm Chalk & Behrendt Lawyers & Consultants has launched a scholarship geared towards First Nations law students.

The firm partnered with the University of Newcastle on the Chalk & Behrendt Indigenous Scholarship, which offers up to $30,000 in financial support to the university’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

According to Chalk & Behrendt director Elizabeth McDonald, the scholarship is “about investing in First Nations students and taking a little bit of the pressure off those later years of law school”. Per the 2024 National Profile of Solicitors commissioned by the Law Society of NSW, just 0.8% of solicitors identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

“Scholarships like this are an example of the kind of support that law firms can provide to help make the legal profession a more inclusive and diverse environment”, Chalk & Behrendt said.

Interested parties may apply for the program via the University of Newcastle’s scholarship portal.
