More than 700 British lawyers have now registered in Ireland
With the post-Brexit future still far from certain, the latest figures reveal that more than 700 British solicitors have now registered to practice in the Republic of Ireland.

If the terms of the Brexit deal do not include ‘passporting’ of legal services, UK lawyers will not be able to appear in the EU’s higher courts; registration in Ireland will protect that ability while benefitting from the special pre-EU free movement agreement between the UK and Ireland.

The Law Society of Ireland’s director general Ken Murphy told The Guardian that 543 solicitors from England & Wales have registered since the start of 2016 along with 21 from Northern Ireland; a further 145 applications are being processed.

Insurance head takes senior partner role at global firm
Simon Konsta has been appointed senior partner at global law firm Clyde & Co. following an uncontested election.

The London-based global head of insurance will take over from James Burns on 1st November 2016 and has been with the firm for two decades having joined legacy Barlow Lyde & Gilbert in 1993.

Konsta joined the global management board in 2011 when Barlows merged with Clyde; he was appointed insurance head in 2013.
“My primary focus will be on maintaining that while broadening out our client programme across all sectors and regions so that we are ready for the next phase of our growth," he said.

That growth plan depends on strong regional management and Konsta’s successor, James Burns, is moving to the position of head of the Americas.

Baker & McKenzie expands global capabilities

The hires were from a Swiss law firm and includes leading lawyers in areas including Banking & Finance, Corporate and M&A, Competition & Antitrust, and Intellectual Property/IT.
