International Human Rights barrister Amal Clooney is surely used to being the most impressive person in the room, but showing up her new husband and his lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes on Monday night was probably not something she was expecting.
International Human Rights barrister Amal Clooney is surely used to being the most impressive person in the room, but showing up her new husband and his lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes on Monday night was probably not something she was expecting.
George Clooney received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. His contributions however seem trivial compared with his wife’s impressive CV, as hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler humorously pointed out.
“George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria and was selected for a three person UN commission investigating rules of war violation in the Gaza strip. So tonight, her husband is getting a life time achievement award,” quipped Fey.
The couple married in a lavish ceremony in Venice late last year.
Amal has represented clients before the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, as well as in UK and US domestic courts. She was part of the legal team representing the Cambodian government in a territorial dispute with Thailand, and has represented former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
It’s no wonder she looked bored.
Poor George wasn’t the only one in the firing line that night – Fey and Poehler poked fun at actor Steve Carell: “In Foxcatcher Steve Carell plays a paranoid, murderous billionaire. It’s a stretch for Carell, who in real-life is a paranoid, murderous millionaire”.
Yikes!
