He tells Australasian Lawyer what he hopes to achieve in his tenure as managing director
Earlier this week, new Kain Lawyers managing director Michael Garry shared to Australasian Lawyer the most important thing he learned about leadership from his predecessor John Kain. In the second part of this interview, Garry discusses the firm’s strategy for the next five years and the legacy he hopes to leave in this leadership role.
There have been a number of formidable boutique law firms with strong transaction practices over the last 30 years, but which have had limited geographic spread or limited focus on multi-generational continuity. Kain Lawyers seeks to step into that space as the leading national firm in transactional services and do so in a way that sets up the firm for long term success and sustainability as recognised market leaders.
Under our next five-year strategy, we will continue to grow out our offering in areas with the greatest flows of private and institutional capital, particularly through fund managers and ‘aggregators’ that are focussed on mid-market private equity, private credit and alternative asset classes such as agricultural, infrastructure and real estate projects and decarbonisation investment.
We will also be looking at how we provide more effective and efficient services to clients across all of our practice areas. This includes through the adoption of technologies that help us efficiently execute on our roles, and in the provision of thought leadership and continued market analysis that is domain of a specialist transactions firm.
As a firm, we want to be known for delivering excellent outcomes for our clients, our team and community. As Kain Lawyers continues to build out its service offering, we are looking to be a true national specialist that is a recognised go-to firm in the mid-market transaction space. Our aim is to build a compelling and differentiated experience for both our clients and our people.
In my role as managing director, I hope to guide the firm to a position where it can be a market leader, one that not only serves the needs of today but is built to support future generations. Contributing to Kain Lawyers' long-term success is a key focus for me over the next five years.
