DLA Piper hires new partner from KWM

DLA Piper will boost its finance and projects practice in Australia with the imminent arrival of a senior projects lawyer in Brisbane.

Tom Fotheringham is moving to the global firm to become a partner on 23 April from King & Wood Mallesons, where he has been a senior associate for more than six years. He was also previously at Allens.

The senior lawyer has extensive experience in project development, particularly in the oil and gas, energy, resources, and infrastructure sectors. He is also an expert in acquisitions and divestments, joint ventures, and commodity sales.

“Tom is a skilled projects lawyer and his appointment bolsters our energy and resources practice in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the oil and gas sector,” said Onno Bakker, DLA Piper’s head of finance and projects in Australia.

Jim Holding, joint managing partner in Australia, said that Fotheringham joins a global team of experienced projects, energy, and infrastructure lawyers. The team’s clients include the world’s largest oil and gas companies, as well as investment banks active in energy and commodities trading, he said. Fotheringham’s appointment follows DLA Piper’s promotion of five Australian lawyers and five New Zealand lawyers to partner earlier this month. Melinda Upton, joint managing partner in Australia, said that it is an exciting period of growth for the global legal giant’s Australian business.

“We have been firmly focussed on delivering on our commitment to make significant investments in strategic areas, particularly in our finance and projects and corporate groups, and we are continuing to take on major headline matters for our clients,” she said.
