Clarence Kunnel, Holding Redlich’s CEO, recently spent a night outdoors, sleeping with cardboard for shelter, to help raise funds and awareness to combat homelessness.

It was the eighth year Kunnel participated in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Melbourne. As of press time, he has raised nearly $6,400 for this year’s fundraiser. In the eight years he has participated, Kunnel has helped raised more than $55,000 for the organisation.

Kunnel said that some recent changes to laws have made it even harder for homeless people.

“There have been some significant changes recently to by-laws that cover makeshift camps in public spaces in the Melbourne CBD area, with the city’s major council voting to give authorities greater powers to remove the camps. But this just serves to make life even tougher for homeless people,” he said.

Nearly 1,500 leaders have signed up to participate in the event held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Launceston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, and Wollongong.

“By taking part in this event, we [not only] get just a small insight into the world of a homeless person, but we also get the opportunity to spread the word and raise funds to help improve this growing problem,” he said. “Homelessness is a major issue for our cities and unfortunately the problem is getting worse. There are too many men, women – and children – sleeping rough on the streets. It is important to look at ways to reduce this issue and help get people on the paths to a better life. Groups such as Vinnies are to be applauded for their ongoing efforts to help – and I’m very proud to be taking part in their Sleepout event for the eighth year.”
