Listed UK firm makes high-profile acquisition to expand to Ireland

A UK-listed legal and professional services company has acquired a high-profile law firm to expand to Ireland.

Gateley has acquired the eponymous law firm helmed by top libel lawyer Paul Tweed in a deal valued at £2m, split between cash and issued shares.

The firm was established by Tweed in 2017 and has offices in Belfast, Dublin, and London. Tweed has represented a number of celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Britney Spears, and Sylvester Stallone.

Gateley said that the acquisition gives the company a “platform for growth in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.” The acquisition expands its offering in media law, reputation management, privacy, commercial litigation, and brand protection, it said.

Tweed said that Gateley’s expertise will also benefit his firm, enhancing its offering to clients. The firm will become Gateley Tweed. It will be one of the eight businesses of the listed group, which reported revenues of £103m in 2019.

“We have considered expanding into the Irish market for some time and Tweed strengthens our presence in the Irish professional services market. We see this move as a springboard for developing a strong legal services offering in Ireland,” said Michael Ward, Gateley chief executive.

In 2015, Gateley became the first commercial law firm in the UK to be listed on the London market.
